The oldest protected area in Spain it is found in Asturias. In addition to being one of the world's best reserves of Atlantic forest ecosystems, the Picos de Europa National Park includes the largest limestone formation in Atlantic Europe and it is home of several animal species, including the mythical Cantabrian brown bear and the elusive wood grouse.
You may visit the historical Cangas de Onís, former capital of the Kingdom of Asturias. From there you can easily reach the Royal Site of Covadonga and the emblematic lakes of Covadonga. You can spot the famous Picu Urriellu (also known as Naranjo de Bulnes) and visit the breathtaking Cares River gorge. If you prefer, you can also access the inside of a natural cave and learn about the process of making the Cabrales artisan cheese.
